Bilateral relations

Bilateral relations

Economically, the UK has been a major investor in Ghana over the last few years and remains a key non-oil trading partner of Ghana.

UK and Ghana Bilateral relations

The UK and Ghana enjoy excellent bilateral relations founded on shared values including democracy, human rights and good governance, a common commitment to the Millennium Development Goals, and strong historical and cultural links.

In 2009 the UK in Ghana is:

  •             raising awareness of the impact of climate change which threatens to slow development in Ghana by reducing agricultural production and increasing disease.
  •             working with the Ghanaian authorities to tackle serious crime including drug trafficking, people smuggling and corruption.
  •            implementing UK immigration law transparently, efficiently and with respect for visa applicants, and working with the Ghanaian authorities to combat document fraud.
  •            helping British nationals resident in Ghana or visiting the country
  •            promoting trade and investment in the UK.  The UK is Ghana's major non-oil trading partner.  In 2007 UK-Ghana was worth £270m.
  •           supporting development.  The UK is the leading donor and will invest £250m in Ghana over the next three years to reduce poverty.
  •           increasing the capacity of the Ghanaian armed forces and police to contribute effectively to African Union and United Nations peace support operations.
  •           empowering individuals and organisations to contribute to positive social change and strengthen civil society through the British Council by building relationships between people in Britain and Ghana and promoting British skills development expertise.
