UK Women Minister visits Ghana
Harriet Harman, Minister for Women and Leader of the House of Commons, visited Ghana from 13-15 April. In calls on the Attorney General, Minister for Trade and Industry, and Minister for Women and Children, she discussed the impact of the global economic crisis on Ghana. She also discussed work to tackle barriers to greater gender equality, including during a visit to the domestic violence victims' support unit (DOVVSU) and judges from the Supreme and Appeal Courts.
In a speech before an audience of around 200 at the British Council, Harriet Harman welcomed Ghana's continued progress in economic development and governance, and reflected on the UK's pursuit of gender equality. She underlined the importance of getting women into strategic jobs in both the public and private sector, welcoming that for the first time Ghana has a woman Speaker of Parliament, Attorney General and Chief Justice.
Harriet Harman also met the Second Deputy Speaker in Parliament, and the Majority and Minority Leaders. On a day trip out of Accra, she saw projects run by British charity Plan UK in the villages of Mangoase and Obrachire.
